We asked that question years ago, when she just simply appeared as people do within certain scenes. She came out to shows and a few of our parties, but always alone, and outside of a handful of rants against what she called the mental disease of modern-day music, we knew next to nothing about her.
We journeyed to Joshua Tree as we do each year, to record musical sketches amidst mushrooms and ego death. In the dead of the first night, Pearl showed up with ideas.
Songs materialized like they were being recalled from long lost memories. Days later we awoke with scattered memories of what happened, but there was no sign of Pearl. Just the tapes remained.
Because we only knew her tangentially, we had no way of contacting her. We asked a few friends where she might have gone but nobody knew. She’d more or less vanished. And so, in a last-ditch attempt to find our friend, we offer up a few of these songs, a beacon of sorts, an earnest attempt to call her back. We did little to them, just adding bits and pieces to the mix.
